Walmart is a retail corporation. It is comprised of a broad network of department stores and offers its customers online shopping through its huge internet marketplace. The company has locations in multiple countries and employs over 2.2 million people.
Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, opened his first discount store in 1962. The small store was located in Rogers, Arkansas. By 1967 the Walton family had opened 24 stores with an income of over $12 million. By 1970 the company was incorporated and continued to grow. Its first public shares of the stock were sold for $16.50 in 1970 as Walton began to take his company nationwide. The 1980s saw a time of great change and growth through the opening of Sam’s Club stores and Walmart supercenters that combined grocery sales with general merchandise and the corporation brought in sales of over $ 1 billion. By the 1990s, Walmart was America’s top retailer. The company crossed the American border and expanded its operations into Mexico, Canada, China, and the United Kingdom. It was making over $ 1 billion in sales per week. And in that same decade, Sam Walton passed away. The new millennium brought about the unveiling of Walmart.com, the company’s online store that offered its customers at-home shopping with the same low price points as its physical stores. Walmart is still going strong today with a store in nearly every city in America and numerous locations in other countries.
